Upgrade request for playground in south Mayo town

MAYO County Council has been asked to upgrade the playground in Ballinrobe as it is currently in a very poor condition.

Councillor Michael Burke has tabled a notice of motion on the matter, highlighting how the amenity is used by a lot of people.

Councillor Patsy O'Brien supported his request, saying the infrastructure was put in place nearly 20 years ago and it needs to be upgraded.

A point was also made by Councillor Neil Cruise that all playgrounds in the county need to have funding to improve access for children with a disability so that all children can play together.

It is hoped funding may become available for Ballinrobe playground under the CLÁR programme.

In a written reply to his motion, Councillor Burke was told: 'The playground has been prioritised by the municipal district and the council's parks superintendent for national funding in recent years. As a result, some works have been carried out but more are required.

'The 2026 CLÁR scheme, which is now open for applications, may provide an opportunity for same.'
