New Adult ADHD service for Mayo to open late 2026

Adults with ADHD in Mayo and the wider west of Ireland region are a step closer to getting a dedicated public service, with the HSE confirming that recruitment is progressing and the new service is expected to open in late 2026.

The HSE has confirmed that the new specialist Adult ADHD Team for the west and north west will be based at the Castlebar Primary Care Centre. The team will provide a dedicated public service for adults who need assessment, diagnosis and ongoing support. The HSE has advised that recruitment is moving ahead for a number of key posts, including administrative, occupational therapy, psychology and nursing roles. The service is expected to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to the remaining posts being filled.

Welcoming the news, Minister Alan Dillon said: “This is real progress for adults with ADHD in Mayo and the wider west of Ireland. For too long, many adults have struggled to get the assessment, diagnosis and support they need.

“A dedicated Adult ADHD Service based in Castlebar will make a real difference. It means people will have access to specialist care closer to home, rather than being left to navigate the system on their own.”

Minister Dillon added: “Mental health services must reflect the real needs of people in our communities. Adult ADHD is better understood now than ever before, and public services must keep pace with that need.

“I will continue to press the HSE to ensure recruitment is completed and that this service opens as planned. Adults with ADHD deserve timely, high-quality care and proper support.”
