Special project brings Mayo nursing home residents on virtual visits to heritage sites

THE Office of Public Works (OPW) recently partnered with Sonas Nursing Home in Belmullet, together with local immersive technology company Global VAM, on a special project to celebrate National Arts in Nursing Homes Day.

As part of the initiative, residents at Sonas were invited to explore a range of iconic OPW heritage sites through virtual reality technology, all from the comfort of their own surroundings.

Using VR headsets, they were able to take immersive virtual tours of renowned locations including the Céide Fields, the Battle of the Boyne, Newgrange, and Kilkenny Castle, offering an engaging and interactive way to connect with Ireland’s rich heritage and history.

Belmullet-based company Global VAM, which specialises in extended reality (XR) experiences, worked closely with the OPW to deliver the experience for residents. Martin Lavelle attended the event and provided the virtual reminisce activity headsets used throughout the session.

Global VAM develops person-centred virtual reality experiences for nursing home residents and delivers services nationwide, helping people in care settings enjoy meaningful and immersive activities through technology.

Commenting on the initiative, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, said: “The OPW was very pleased to work alongside Sonas Nursing Home, Belmullet, on this innovative initiative. Through virtual reality technology, residents had the opportunity to experience some of Ireland’s most treasured OPW heritage sites in a new and accessible way.

“This project, which is now in its second year, recognises National Arts in Nursing Homes Day and forms part of a wider programme of events taking place at OPW heritage sites throughout May as part of the annual Age and Opportunity Bealtaine Festival.

“I am also delighted to say that on Friday, May 22, all fee-paying OPW heritage sites nationwide will offer free admission to senior citizens, encouraging greater participation in and appreciation of Ireland’s cultural heritage.”

Recreational therapist at Sonas Nursing Home, Rita Scott, also welcomed the initiative, highlighting the positive impact the experience had on residents and the value of innovative activities that promote engagement and wellbeing.
