Mayo based Educate Together National School seeks long-term accommodation

Minister Alan Dillon has said he remains fully committed to working with parents, school management, staff and the wider Castlebar community to secure proper long-term accommodation for Castlebar Educate Together National School.

Minister Dillon said he understands the frustration felt by families and the school community, especially as the school continues to grow and current accommodation at Marsh House has been deemed unsuitable for the future.

“I know parents, staff and the school community are frustrated, and I share that frustration. This school needs safe, suitable and long-term accommodation, and I am determined to keep pushing until that is delivered.”

The Department of Education has confirmed that talks are continuing with Educate Together, the school patron, about a new lease for the Hat Factory building, which is currently one of the buildings used by the school. The Department is also waiting on a technical report from the school and patron on further works proposed for the Hat Factory building. These works would help provide more space for the school.

Some progress has already been made under the Additional Accommodation Scheme, with a Special Education Tuition room, staff room, mainstream classroom and external works now completed.

Minister Dillon said: “The works completed to date are welcome, but I know there is still a lot more to do. The focus now has to be on securing the Hat Factory building for the longer term and moving forward with the additional works needed.”

The Mayo TD said he will continue to raise the matter with the Department of Education, the school and Educate Together and ensure the school community is kept updated. He added: “Parents and staff need certainty. I will continue to push this at every opportunity so that Castlebar Educate Together gets the facilities it needs and deserves.”
