New arts funding scheme could benefit Mayo organisations

A new Minor Capital Works Scheme for the Arts will open for applications in the coming weeks. This scheme will present a major new opportunity for community groups, arts organisations, drama groups, choirs, festival committees and cultural bodies across Mayo to strengthen their facilities and expand their reach.

Minister Alan Dillon is encouraging all eligible groups to engage with the scheme, begin preparing applications, and start brainstorming project ideas that could benefit their organisation and community. He highlighted that Mayo is uniquely positioned to benefit, given its strong tradition of arts, culture, heritage and music. Minister Dillon said: “Mayo has a proud tradition of creativity, from our music and storytelling to our festivals and community arts. This scheme is a real chance to build on that and invest in the future of culture across our county.”

Minister Dillon welcomed the progress of the scheme, noting that it is an issue he has raised previously: “I’m delighted to see this scheme progressing, particularly as it’s an issue I’ve raised previously with Minister Patrick O’Donovan. The initiative will support local drama groups, choirs, dance groups, festival organisers, community centres and arts organisations to improve their facilities and enhance what they offer to the public.”

The scheme offers three distinct funding categories: Up to €100,000 for all equipment such as lighting, sound systems and IT upgrades; up to €200,000 for construction and refurbishment works; up to €15,000 for community and voluntary groups for items such as props, costumes and staging. Funding of up to 95% of project costs will be available in most cases, making it highly accessible for community-led initiatives.

Minister Dillon is asking all interested groups to consider what projects could make the biggest impact locally, what improvements could enhance their facilities, what equipment would support performances or exhibitions, and how their group could reach more people in the community.

The scheme is designed to support not-for-profit organisations and community groups engaged in arts and culture, ensuring that local creativity continues to thrive and grow.

Further details will be announced shortly on the application process.
