Gardaí action sought on Mayo urban traffic congestion blackspot
An appeal has been issued to Castlebar Municipal District to write to the superintendent in charge of An Garda Síochána in the county town in respect of a consistent traffic congestion issue.
Councillor Harry Barrett wants members of the force to provide traffic management support between 8.20 and 9.10 a.m. each school day morning 'to ease the serious congestion coming down Gallows Hill’.
"I am also asking council management to review and adjust the sequencing of traffic lights at Linenhall Street/Bridge Street and at the top of Ellison Street during these peak morning times to help traffic move more freely through the town centre," he said.
He has tabled a motion on the matter for consideration at next Wednesday’s meeting of the district.
Councillor Barrett has been raising this issue for a number of years but nothing has happened to address a situation which will only get worse due to the high level of new houses under construction in the Rathbawn and Snugboro areas.
