Promoting dignity, inclusion and menstrual health awareness on Mayo Period Dignity Day
MAYO Period Dignity Day will bring communities across the county together to celebrate dignity, inclusion and equality for all who menstruate.
The initiative is being led by South West Mayo Development Company in partnership with the HSE, Healthy Mayo, Ballyhaunis FRC, Claremorris FRC and Mayo Pride, reflecting a shared commitment to breaking stigma and promoting open, respectful conversations about periods.
Mayo Period Dignity Day highlights that menstruation is a normal part of life and that nobody should face shame, exclusion or hardship because of their period. It also sends a clear message that period dignity is not only about access to products, but also about access to information, suitable facilities, support and the confidence to seek help when needed.
Two information events will be held on periods and menstrual health on Mayo Period Dignity Day, one in Ballyhaunis FRC and another in Claremorris FRC, both at 7 p.m. on May 28.
South West Mayo Development Company will also have a stall Period Dignity stand at Mayo Pride festival in Westport on Saturday, May 30.
The day will shine a light on the importance of ensuring that women, girls and all people who menstruate - including trans men, non-binary people and some intersex people - can take part fully in school, work, sport, family life and community life without embarrassment or disadvantage.
It also draws attention to the fact that silence and stigma around periods can stop people from speaking about heavy, painful or otherwise difficult periods, and can delay access to medical advice and support.
Corena Ward from South West Mayo Development Company said: “This day is about dignity, respect and inclusion. It is about making sure nobody in Mayo feels ashamed, isolated or unsupported because of their period.
“We are proud to work with partners from health, education, equality and community sectors to help create a county where periods can be spoken about openly and where everyone who menstruates feels seen, supported and respected.”
The partnership behind Mayo Period Dignity Day reflects the strength of community action in Mayo and the importance of working together across sectors to support health and wellbeing. Organisers hope the day will encourage more open conversations in schools, services, sports clubs, homes and communities right across the county.
Mayo Period Dignity Day is a celebration of progress, but also a call to keep going - to continue building a Mayo where period dignity is part of everyday life.
