Three men and a youth charged over Mayo town centre assault
Three men and a youth have been charged in connection with an assault that occurred in the Tucker Street area of Castlebar in the early hours of Saturday, August 23, 2025.
The four defendants appeared at Castlebar District Court today before Judge Vincent Deane.
Detective Garda Roisin Loftus gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in respect of Davitt Neary (23), Shanvalley, Breaffy Woods, Castlebar, who faces charges under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and Section 15 violent disorder under the Public Order Act.
Neary made no reply to the charges.
Solicitor Thomas J. Walsh represented Neary, who deferred the question of legal aid.
Detective Garda William Grant of Castlebar Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in respect of Oran Groarke (23), Ballynew, Turlough Road, who faces a charge under Section 15 of the Public Order Act.
Groarke made no reply to the charge and legal aid was granted.
Detective Garda John Flannery of Westport Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in respect of Paul Dowding (24), Frenchill, Castlebar, who faces charges under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and Section 15 Public Order Act.
Dowding made no reply to either charge.
Ms. Kathleen Henry BL, appeared for Dowding, made an application for legal aid, noting her client is on the dole and his income is €77 per week.
Legal aid was granted, with solicitor Kieran O'Brien assigned.
A youth, who cannot be named due to his age at the time of the alleged offence, also appeared before the court facing charges under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and violent disorder.
Detective Garda Loftus gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.
The youth made no reply to the charges and he was granted legal aid.
The Director of Public Prosecutions directed prosecution on indictment in the circuit court in respect of all four cases.
All four were remanded on nominal bail, €100 own bond, to appear before the court on July 1, 2026, for service of a book of evidence.
