Call for young dementia carers in Mayo to seek support

Ahead of National Carers Week (June 8 to 14), the Alzheimer Society of Ireland is encouraging young people in Mayo and throughout Ireland aged from 11 to 17 who are supporting a loved one with dementia to seek the support they need, highlighting that not all carers are adults.

As one out of every 10 people diagnosed with dementia in Ireland is under the age of 65, younger families are increasingly affected, with children and teenagers taking on caring roles within the home.

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) has teamed up with Family Carers Ireland to deliver iSupport for Young People, a new online education programme designed specifically for young people who care for or support someone living with dementia. The programme is set to launch this autumn.

The fully online programme will provide young people with practical information about dementia as well as a safe and supportive space to talk about their experiences. It will cover topics such as understanding dementia, the role of the carer, caring for yourself, providing everyday support, and managing more complex situations.

Dr. Fergus Timmons, Learning & Development Quality, Innovation and Growth Manager at the ASI, said: “Not all carers are adults – many young people are supporting someone with dementia, often without recognising themselves as carers. Dementia does not just affect the individual diagnosed; it affects the whole family.

“Caring for someone living with dementia takes many forms, and it’s vital that young people have access to the relevant information and support. iSupport for Young People has been developed to give them the confidence and reassurance they need, while also letting them know they are not alone.”

The programme will be delivered by experienced tutors, with content developed by Bangor University in Wales and shaped by the input of young people.

The ASI is encouraging young people and families to find out more about the programme and to express their interest in taking part. An online Information Session about the programme will take place at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 8, hosted by Family Carers Ireland. Young people aged from 10 to 17 can register by emailing youngcarers@familycarers.ie. (Note: this session is designed for young people to attend independently.) Further information is also available via the ASI’s national helpline on 1800 341 341.
