Civic reception proposed ahead of rumoured Mayo visit by Canadian PM
RUMOURS abound that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit Mayo next month.
The Westport Municipal District is planning ahead for a possible visit with a proposal to host a civic reception in Aughagower, the PM's ancestral home.
Councillor Brendan Mulroy formally proposed the reception at the monthly municipal district meeting yesterday, where he said rumours are circulating that Mr. Carney will visit Aughagower and Westport in June.
It would be a historic event and also very symbolic to hold it in Aughagower, said Councillor Mulroy.
In the event of the visit taking place, Councillor Johnny O'Malley again reiterated his request that the road leading to Mr. Carney's homestead be upgraded in advance. They couldn't have the PM going up there through potholes and briars, he said.
The invitation is to be sent to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
