North Mayo community to lose its post office with closure confirmed

A NORTH Mayo community is to lose its post office.

Geesala Post Office will close on June 28, An Post has confirmed.

Efforts had been made to find an alternative location in the village for the post office but to no avail.

The matter was raised at a municipal district meeting yesterday by local Councillor Gerry Coyle who said the community in Doohoma lost their post office a few years ago, and Geesala will be next as there is nobody to take it on.

There was an effort to bring it into the local centre but it's 'all rules and regulations', he commented.

In response to a query from The Connaught Telegraph today, An Post has confirmed the post office in Geesala will close next month.

A spokesperson said the postmaster informed them some time ago that he wished to step back from the role.

“We worked hard to find another contractor to provide post office services in Geesala. We advertised the vacant contract a number of times and canvassed business in the general area but to no avail.

“It is with regret therefore that we announce that the post office will now close on Wednesday, June 28th.”

The statement added: “Arrangements are in place to enable customers to access services at other post offices in the area including Bangor Erris, Bunnahowen, and Belmullet.

"Department of Social Protection payments will be available via Banger Erris Post Office.”
