€3.6m allocated to major community project in Mayo parish
Minister of State Alan Dillon has confirmed the allocation of €3.6 million in funding for the Islandeady Community Facilities Development, describing it as a huge boost for the parish and a very positive development for rural Mayo.
The funding has been allocated by the Department of Justice under the Immigrant Investor Programme and will support the development of a new Community Hub and Biodiversity Park in Islandeady.
Minister Dillon said the investment will help deliver a long-awaited community project that has been driven from the ground up by local people.
“This is fantastic news for Islandeady and a major vote of confidence in the community. I have been glad to support and engage with the local committee throughout this process, and today’s allocation is a very positive step forward.
"This project has the potential to transform the heart of Islandeady and provide a modern, welcoming space for people of all ages.”
The Islandeady Community Facilities Development will include a modern community hub, sports and meeting facilities, learning spaces, a café, biodiversity areas, a natural play space, parking, changing facilities and accessible supports.
The project will create a real centre for the parish, supporting community groups, local events, sport, learning, wellbeing, biodiversity and social connection. It will also help address rural isolation by giving people a shared place to meet, take part and stay connected.
Minister Dillon said the project is an example of what can be achieved when local effort is matched by Government support.
“There has been a huge amount of work done by the Islandeady community to bring this project to this stage.
"I want to acknowledge Liam Keaveney, Caroline McLoughlin, the entire committee, local volunteers, fundraisers and everyone who has backed this vision. The level of community effort has been outstanding, and this allocation recognises that work.”
Minister Dillon also welcomed a separate allocation of €2 million for Knockmore GAA Club, describing it as another important investment in local facilities and community life.
He said investment in projects such as Islandeady Community Facilities Development and Knockmore GAA is vital for strengthening rural communities, supporting young people, improving local amenities and ensuring parishes across Mayo have the facilities they need for the future.
Islandeady Development Company CLG will now progress the next stages of planning and delivery.
Minister Dillon said he will continue working with the committee, local representatives and relevant stakeholders to support the project as it moves forward.
“This is a huge boost, but the work does not stop here. The next step is to keep the momentum going and support the project through planning, delivery and completion. I will continue to work with the community and support their efforts to see this vision delivered for Islandeady and for future generations.”
