Safety concerns on Mayo active travel route where path is level with road

THERE are some safety concerns along the footpath/cycleway out to Breaffy village being developed under the active travel programme.

There are locations where the path is level with the road. And where cars stop to turn right, vehicles behind them swing onto the path to get around them.

There are a few turn-offs to the right where this could be an issue, Councillor Cyril Burke told a Castleabr Municipal District meeting, with vehicles sweeping up onto the footpath to get past.

Cathaoirleach Councillor Al McDonnell said he had raised the issue of the road and path being at the same level with the roads design office, saying it is highly dangerous.

He was disappointed with the reaction he got and asked council management to follow it up with them again.

Director of services David Mellett said there is still work to be completed on the project, including signage and line markings, which will address some of the concerns raised.

The scheme, he added, is having the desired effect of slowing traffic down.

The works will be the subject of a final safety risk assessment.
