Castlebar Mitchels secure Mayo minor league title

A masterful display by Castlebar Mitchels helped the red and yellow record a comfortable 3-13 to 0-8 victory against Westport in the Minor Division One League Final, at Clogher on Friday.

Castlebar, led by the industry and guile of Ben Joyce, played with plenty of vim and vigour during the 60 minutes, whereas Westport struggled to implement their own game plan.

Westport were the first to trouble the scoreboard operator, with Thomas Williams’ two-pointer free drawing much acclaim from the navy and sky blue faithful.

However, Castlebar quickly settled into the game and the red and yellow rattled off three awesome two-pointers in quick succession from Daniel Filan, Patrick Garvey and Ben Joyce (free).

Castlebar enjoyed the lion’s share of possession during the first half, and they could well have added a goal on 28 minutes, however, Darragh Broderick’s effort was tipped over his crossbar by Williams. Nonetheless, Joyce cooly slotted over the subsequent ’45 and the red and yellow led 0-10 to 0-4 during the half-time musings.

Five minutes into the second half, Castlebar added a goal through Aidan Dempsey.

There was a slight lull in proceedings before the next score arrived on 47 minutes, when Westport midfielder Ross O’Connor added a badly needed two-pointer for his team-mates.

As the game drifted towards full-time, Castlebar notched their second goal of the joust on 57 minutes. A neat attacking foray culminated in Mujic setting up Niall Treacy and despite the latter’s effort being saved by Williams, the poaching Garvey was on hand to guide home the rebound.

The red and yellow ended the game in a flurry and a late goal from Treacy proved to be the icing on the cake for Castlebar.
