Mayo housing estate to be placed on derelict sites register

THE abandoned Waterways estate on the Ballinrobe Road in Castlebar is set to be placed on the derelict sites register.

The derelict estate has been the subject of local and more recently national media commentary, having been described as 'the Taj Mahal of dereliction'.

Noting how it's now entering its third decade, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne has queried council management on what's happening with the estate and why it's not already on the register.

Director of services David Mellett said the ownership issues are complex.

There has been extensive engagement and some commitments and expectations, which have not materialised, he added.

The next step now is to move forward and put it on the derelict sites register.
