Turn left only trial proposed to try and solve chaos at Mayo junction

TRAFFIC congestion at the top of the Golf Course Road in Westport continues to be an item for regular discussion at municipal district meetings, along with the slip road in the nearby industrial estate.

Archaeology works are on site at the industrial park extension, and with a contractor appointed, site boundary fencing will be going up soon along with ducting for overhead power lines.

Councillor Johnny O'Malley is concerned that the slip road may not work as well as hoped unless facility is made for trucks unloading in the industrial park. Extra parking is needed for employees and customers, he highlighted at the May district meeting, saying there is a green area there 'doing nothing'.

On the Golf Course Road, he wondered about traffic lights, to assist traffic trying to exit the road, where he has waited 20 minutes for a truck to get a clear run on both sides to be able to turn out.

There is 'chaos' at peak traffic times, said Councillor O'Malley.

His colleague Councillor Peter Flynn wondered about having a trial where traffic can only turn left, going down to the roundabout and then proceeding on in the Castlebar direction or turning back into Westport.

He also suggested a site meeting to look at the issues raised about the slip road and trucks unloading.

The members were told the junction can be referred to the roads section to look at, with some concern expressed about traffic coming to a standstill at the roundabout at busy times.

They were told it is up to every business to satisfy their parking needs for their staff and clients.
