Families 'left frightened' as vital post at Mayo hospital is left vacant

Appeal for immediate replacement of diabetes specialist post

An appeal has been issued for the immediate replacement of vital diabetes specialist post at Mayo University Hospital.

Making the plea, local Councillor Harry Barrett stated: "Children living with Type 1 Diabetes in Mayo cannot become the latest victims of staffing shortages in our health service.

"Families are frightened and deeply concerned at the prospect of losing a service that many describe as a lifeline during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

"I am calling on HSE management to immediately fill the paediatric diabetes clinical nurse specialist post at Mayo University Hospital and to provide urgent reassurance to families that this vital service will not be allowed to deteriorate.

"Parents of children in Castlebar living with Type 1 Diabetes have contacted me with serious concerns about the future of the service following the extended leave and upcoming retirement of the current specialist nurse. These concerns are entirely justified.

"For many families, a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes turns life upside down overnight.

"Parents suddenly find themselves managing insulin, blood sugar levels, medical technology, diet, illness and the constant fear of a potentially life-threatening emergency. In those moments, the support of a highly skilled specialist nurse is not a luxury. It is an essential lifeline.

"The paediatric diabetes clinical nurse specialist provides expert guidance, education and reassurance to children and their families at some of the most stressful and frightening times in their lives.

"Losing that expertise without a properly trained replacement in place would be deeply worrying and could have serious consequences for patient care.

"I have spoken with parents whose children depend on this service every day. They are worried about what happens next. They need clear answers on whether a replacement has been identified, what training and handover arrangements are being put in place, and what the long-term plan is to protect and strengthen paediatric diabetes services in Mayo.

"No parent should be left wondering if the specialist support their child depends upon will still be there next week or next month.

"Children in Mayo living with Type 1 Diabetes already face enough challenges every single day. Their parents carry that burden with them around the clock. The least they should expect is a fully staffed specialist service that provides continuity of care and peace of mind.

"I am urging HSE management to act immediately fill this position without delay, and ensure that children with diabetes in Mayo continue to receive the expert care and support they deserve."
