20 Mayo athletes attend Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games launch

More than 300 athletes, families, supporters, volunteers and special guests gathered last night at the Dexcom Stadium, Galway, for the official launch of Team Connaught ahead of the Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games 2026.

The celebratory event recognised the dedication, skill, and strong team spirit of over 150 Connaught athletes, including 20 athletes from Co. Mayo, who will represent the region across 12 sports at the Summer Games, bringing pride and excitement to their clubs, counties and local communities as they compete in Ireland’s largest inclusive sporting event of the year.

Hosted by senior management and leadership consultant Denise Ni Cheallaigh, the launch featured a high-energy parade of athletes, keynote speeches, and a panel interview with three athletes, creating an inspiring atmosphere as Team Connaught athletes prepare for competition.

Speaking at the launch, Mayo athlete Brigid Walsh will be representing Connaught in Kayaking and says being selected means the world to her:

“It feels like a dream come true and means a lot to me,”

Brigid is a proud member of Castlebar Special Olympics Club and loves being part of the Special Olympics community.

“I love being involved in Special Olympics and being an ambassador, not just for my club. I’ve been training hard for the Games.

"I’m really looking forward to mixing with new friends and helping out the younger athletes coming up through the ranks – I would say if they need somebody to talk to, or advice, just come to me. Just be proud in yourself and let your dreams come true. Always be yourself!”

Special Olympics Connaught Regional Director, Myra Merrick, said: “Team Connaught athletes have come together in an inspiring display of team spirit, and I’m so proud of each and every athlete who has shown inspiring dedication and positivity. I would like to thank the Team Connaught management team, head coaches and coach chaperones who selflessly give of their time and expertise to make this all possible.”

Head of Delegation for Team Connaught, Aengus Sheerin, said: “Monthly team training sessions have taken place in all sports over the last four months, many of which we were able to attend, and we were very impressed with how well the teams had come together in such a short period of time, a true testament to our athletes and coaches.”

“To all our athletes, we are so delighted to be part of your team. We are all going to Dublin to do our best, but more importantly, to enjoy the experience and have a good time with all the other teams.

"Your towns, community clubs, supporters, and families, many of them here tonight, are all so proud of your achievements. You are all winners, even before we start, and I thank you so much for the honour of being part of your team.”

Connacht Rugby Director of Development, Karl Boyle, said: “We have the joy of having so many events here at Dexcom Stadium, but I don't think there's one that I could be prouder of than tonight’s event.

"We pride ourselves on ambition, belief, and community, and I can see these qualities in spades here tonight. Before an athlete believes in themselves, there are parents and coaches who believe in them.”

The Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games 2026, taking place from 18th to 21st June, will bring together athletes from across the country for three days of competition, friendship and celebration, with events taking place at venues throughout Leinster.

Special Olympics Ireland extends sincere thanks to the Dexcom Stadium and Connacht Rugby for its generous support and partnership in hosting the event.
