Official opening date of Mayo's first dog park is confirmed
The official opening of the Lough Lannagh Dog Park takes place on Friday, June 12, at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar, at 3.30 p.m.
The official opening will be performed by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary.
This innovative amenity was funded through the Community Recognition Fund, which supports projects that enhance local infrastructure and foster community wellbeing.
The initiative was born from strong community demand for a safe, dedicated space where dogs could exercise off-leash without impacting other park users.
It was the brainchild of Councillor Donna Sheridan, who tabled a motion on the matter at a meeting of the Castlebar Municipal District in 2023, after which the funding application was submitted.
With dog ownership rising significantly in Mayo, the absence of such a facility was a clear gap in public amenities.
The project aimed to address this need while complementing the existing recreational offerings at Lough Lannagh - a scenic hub for walking, cycling, and family activities.
Key features include:
· Two separate zones for small and large dogs, ensuring safety and comfort for all breeds.
· Specialised play equipment for dogs, promoting physical activity and enrichment.
· Secure fencing and double-gated entry for safety.
· Seating areas and waste disposal stations for convenience and cleanliness.
· Natural landscaping to blend seamlessly with the lakeside environment.
The design reflects creativity and resourcefulness, repurposing underutilised green space and incorporating sustainable practices.
Delivered through collaboration between Castlebar Municipal District, local businesses, and community volunteers, the project exemplifies strong local partnerships and responsiveness to community needs.
The Lough Lannagh Dog Park has transformed daily life for residents and visitors by creating a vibrant, inclusive space that promotes health, wellbeing and social interaction.
Dog owners now have a secure environment to exercise pets off-leash, reducing conflicts on shared paths and improving the overall experience for all park users.
