Preliminary Business Case 'on track' for Newport sewerage project – Dillon
The Preliminary Business Case for the Newport Sewerage Scheme continues to advance, with good progress made in assessing potential treatment options, identifying suitable locations and examining network layouts, Minister of State, Alan Dillon has said.
This phase of the project remains on target for completion in quarter three of this year, marking a significant step toward delivering a long‑awaited wastewater solution for the community.
Minister Dillon has welcomed the progress, noting that it comes alongside a series of important regulatory milestones.
The Maritime Area Regulatory Authority (MARA) issued a Maritime Usage Licence earlier this month, enabling the project to move forward to its next stage.
Minister Dillon said the latest developments reflect the strong momentum behind the scheme. He emphasised that the Government remains firmly committed to upgrading wastewater infrastructure in towns such as Newport, ensuring environmental compliance and supporting sustainable growth.
“This is a very welcome step for Newport. Securing the Maritime Usage Licence provides the certainty needed for Uisce Éireann to progress the detailed design and planning work. The Government is investing heavily in modern wastewater services, and the Newport scheme is a clear priority within that national programme.”
Once the Preliminary Business Case is completed, Uisce Éireann will be in a position to outline the preferred approach for the scheme.
Minister Dillon said he has been advised by Uisce Éireann that: “Preparations are also underway for the planning phase, with a planning application expected in early 2027, subject to the necessary statutory approvals.”
He added: “While regulatory processes must be followed, the project is moving in the right direction and remains on schedule.”
Reaffirming his personal commitment, Minister Dillon added: “I know how important this project is for the people of Newport.
"I will continue to work closely with Uisce Éireann, MARA and all relevant stakeholders to ensure this scheme progresses without delay.
"Newport has waited long enough for modern wastewater infrastructure, and I am determined to see this project delivered.”
