Rural Mayo school to close this month
A RURAL primary school in west Mayo is to close its doors this month.
The closing of Drummin National School, Westport, brings to an end 177 years of education in the area.
Official confirmation has been received from the Department of Education that the school will close at the end of June.
Nestled in a scenic, mountainous setting, over the years Drummin NS boasted a tradition of teaching excellence, nurturing and developing its young pupils and their talents, and creating many fond memories.
There has been a school in the village since 1849, with the current building dating back to 1936.
A statement issued by the school confirmed that after a lifetime of learning and laughter, Drummin National School will conclude its journey at the end of June.
On Wednesday, June 17, the school will hold a graduation and end-of-year celebration for its pupils, and from 2.30 p.m. onwards, all those who have been a part of the Drummin NS story over the years are invited to visit for tea and cake.
The statement added: “We would like to sincerely thank all those who have supported, encouraged and contributed to the life of the school these past five years, and in the many years previous - past and present families and students, staff members, boards of management, neighbours and friends of the school. Your kindness, generosity and goodwill have helped create something truly special for the children here that will continue long after the doors close.
“As this much-loved chapter ends, we take great pride in all that has been achieved here and look forward to seeing the many paths our pupils will follow in the years ahead.”
