Contractor for Mayo pier repairs due on site in August
A contractor is due on site in mid August or early September to do repair works at Roonagh Pier, which serves Clare Island and Inishturk.
With reduced capacity over the summer, there will be monitoring and maintenance of the pier to help the ferry operators to accommodate demand.
The long-term development is to make it a safe and navigable facility, and work on a strategic assessment for this is due to be completed in the next few weeks.
In an update, head of marine Michael O'Boyle, at an economic and enterprise development strategic policy committee meeting, also spoke of the need for a roll on, roll off facility for the islands and developing a project around them.
Queried about the timeline for the emergency repairs, Mr. O'Boyle said the pier is a complex project, pursued under emergency legislation, which has allowed the council to appoint people in a quicker manner than would normally be the case. It's down to the administration of it, and getting it right and having the correct solution.
