€26k allocated for speed mitigation measures in busy Mayo residential area
Independent Councillor Harry Barrett has welcomed the allocation of €26,000 under the roadworks programme for speed mitigation measures on the L5786 road in Springfield, Castlebar.
The funding will be used to address long-standing concerns from local residents about excessive speeding on the stretch of road from Homeland to the Driving Range, an area where many families, walkers and road users have raised safety concerns.
Councillor Barrett said he had made representations on this matter a number of months ago following repeated complaints from constituents in Fortlands, Springfield Court, Summerfield and the Fairways and is pleased to now see progress being made.
“This is a very welcome allocation and it is badly needed.
"People living in Springfield have been raising the issue of speeding with me for quite some time. There was a real fear there that if action wasn’t taken, somebody could be seriously injured.”
“I made representations on this issue a number of months ago and I am glad to see funding is now being put in place to deal with it. This is about making the road safer for everyone who uses it.”
Councillor Barrett said road safety must remain a priority and he will continue to work with the Castlebar Municipal District to ensure the measures are delivered as quickly as possible.
“This is a positive step for Springfield and for the wider community. When local people speak up about safety, it is important that we listen and act.”
