Majority happy with new junction islands on section of N17 in Mayo

NEW traffic islands at a number of junctions on the N17 in the Claremorris area have been widely welcomed.

While there has been a few concerns raised with councillors about them, there are also other areas where interest in having similar structures has been expressed - at Addergoole, Knock, and Castlegar and the old bog road in Claremorris.

The islands that have been installed on the N17 keep drivers more concentrated on the roadway, Councillor Richard Finn commented at a municipal district meeting, and 90 per cent of people are happy with them. However, there are people with genuine concerns and some felt they were inadequate for purpose, he said.

The three additional areas where requests have come in need to be looked at, he added.

Further down the road at turn-offs for Aghamore and Kiltimagh, safety concerns have again been raised following a recent accident.

Turning for Aughamore has been described as a 'disaster', stood waiting and praying the cars behind will go left by you.

In relation to the Kiltimagh junction, Councillor John Caulfield said the roadside monument, which has been cited as an obstacle to addressing the turn-off, can be moved to an alternative place. The people who it honoured would not want to see lives being put at risk and they could find an alternative place for it, he said.

And further still down the N17, Councillor Gerry Murray again raised a safety issue at the Bushfield turn-off outside Charlestown serving St. Attracta's Nursing Home. It's on a sharp bend, with a continuous white line, and it's extremely dangerous.
