Push for funding for Mayo's iconic Céide Coast trail

SUBSTANTIAL funding needs to be delivered to bring the iconic Céide Coast walking trail in north Mayo to fruition.

The 15-kilometre route runs from the Céide Fields to Downpatrick Head and will feature 11 bridges, including a suspension bridge about two kilometres in that promises to provide those 'Instagrammable' moments.

It is among the catalyst projects identified in the recently launched Wild Mayo Destination and Experience Development Plan.

The project has been driven by the local community, with Mayo County Council also coming on board.

Fencing has started on the trail, as well as mapping, Fáilte Ireland projects officer Edel Healy outlined in an update on Wild Mayo to members of the council's economic and enterprise policy committee.

Councillor Michael Loftus queried the timeline for funding for the project. They were told in 2025 that Fáilte Ireland were opening their purses, but they were a year on and the project needs to be funding, requiring substantial investment from Fáilte Ireland, he said.

It warrants it as, with 11 bridges, it will be tremendous, he commented.
