Canadian Prime Minister touches down in Ireland ahead of Mayo visit

THE Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has touched down at Dublin Airport to begin his two-day visit to Ireland.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin was there to greet Mr. Carney ahead of a full programme of engagements this weekend.

Prime Minister Carney has strong Irish heritage, with three of his grandparents hailing from Ireland - two from Co. Mayo and one from Co. Cavan.

Tomorrow he will travel to the homeplace of his paternal grandparents in Aughagower where he will attend Mass in the parish church and visit the nearby cemetery, where some of his ancestors are buried.

The Canadian flags are flying high in Westport and Aughagower village as excitement builds ahead of his visit on Sunday.

Today's itinerary includes a meeting with the Taoiseach in Government Buildings and dinner in Dublin Castle.
