Expect some traffic restrictions during Prime Minister's Mayo visit

AS Westport prepares to welcome Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney tomorrow, An Garda Síochána is advising motorists to expect some traffic restrictions.

Traffic restrictions, road checks and delays will be in place from this evening and throughout tomorrow (Sunday). Road users are asked to allow extra time for their journeys and to follow the directions of gardaí and event stewards.

As part of the visit, the Prime Minister will attend a number of engagements in Mayo on Sunday and Monday.

In general, traffic restrictions and diversions for the visit will be kept to the minimum required and it is intended that any impact on the public be localised and minimal, a statement issued by An Garda Síochána said.

The gardaí also continue to liaise with businesses and local residents in the key locations and will continue to communicate directly with them during the visit, where required.

They are working to ensure that the nature and scale of the policing and security operation continues to be proportionate to the need to protect everyone’s safety, the statement added.
