Mayo camogie team record morale boosting victory

Mayo recorded a 1-12 to 1-6 victory over Monaghan in round 3 of the All-Ireland Junior Camogie Championship, played at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.

This was Mayo’s final group game, and they can take a lot of positives from this encounter as they prepare for an All-Ireland semi-final on June 27.

The green and red notched the first score of this contest when Méabh Tunney pointed after two minutes. However, a keenly contested period of the game unfolded, and when Monaghan’s Marie Greenan added her second free of the contest on 17 minutes the sides were level at 0-3 apiece.

Monaghan then struck for a goal after 19 minutes, courtesy of Nimah Kelly and white and blue bolstered their advantage thanks to frees from the deadly Greenan.

The visitors could have netted a goal on 21 minutes, however, Greenan's penalty flew inches wide.

Mayo finished the opening half in a positive fashion though, and a free from Westport’s Lisa Scahill on the stroke of half-time left the hosts trailing by just three points at the break, 1-5 to 0-5.

Mayo enjoyed having the majority of possession during the second half and the green and red’s comeback was ignited when Ava Lambert scored a gem of a long-range point. Further singles from Mayo’s Hannah Tener and Amy Murray helped level proceedings and the game was in the melting pot.

Monaghan momentarily regained the lead when Kelly pointed on 51 minutes, but that would be the last time that the guests would trouble the scoreboard operator.

Mayo finished the game strongly and when their dead-ball sniper Scahill added her fifth and final free of the afternoon, the hosts led 0-12 to 1-6.

Then, on the stroke of full-time, Mayo’s Tener added a late goal to add gloss to the full-time score-line.
