Closure of leading Mayo service station a major retail blow

The closure of Maxol Service Station at Station Road, Castlebar, is a significant commercial blow for the county town.

Located off the busy Cathal Duffy Roundabout, customers learned of the development when a sign was erected on main entrance to the premises after close of business on Friday night.

The decision has resulted in a number of job losses as well as the shutting down of services it provided for over a decade.

The facility first opened in May, 2016, following a considerable investment in Duffy's former garage and its adjoining car showroom.

The location had been chosen by Maxol at the time to feature the company’s new Moreish food range as well as offering latest café by Insomnia Coffee Company.

The prime location is unlikely to remain vacant for any considerable length of time, however, as it is certain to attract fresh commercial interest.
