Works get underway on 800-year-old Mayo abbey's €6.4m. investment

Work has commenced on the new Cultural and Heritage Centre at Ballintubber Abbey.

The main contractors, Cunningham Civil & Marine, have moved onto the site to begin operations.

The project will restore the east wing of the 800-year-old abbey and will house a three-floor cultural and heritage visitor attraction to tell the story and history of Ballintubber Abbey and the abbeys of Ireland.

The occasion has been described as 'a landmark moment in the story of the beloved abbey'.

A statement on the abbey's Facebook page continued: "The occasion was beautifully and fittingly marked with a blessing on site by Fr. Farragher, who offered a special prayer for every person who will play a part in bringing this wonderful project to life.

"A deeply moving moment, and one that felt entirely right for a place as sacred and storied as Ballintubber Abbey.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be working alongside the team at Cunningham Civil & Marine in Westport and look forward to the exciting journey ahead together.

"This is more than a building project — it is the next chapter in the story of 'The Abbey that Refused to Die'."

The project will encompass a modern visitor interpretative and interactive learning centre, including gallery and exhibition spaces.

Works will also include conservations to the Chapter House and cloister, as well as enhancements to the abbey grounds.
