Mayo lighthouse celebrating 160th anniversary

BLACKSOD Lighthouse in north Mayo is celebrating 160 years this month.

A number of events will take place on Tuesday, June 30, to mark the special anniversary of the landmark that has stood watch over Blacksod Bay since 1866.

The lighthouse is known the world over for its part in the successful outcome of the D-Day landings from recordings sent from its weather station.

The celebrations will see an open day being held at the lighthouse from 12 to 4 p.m., with a special film screening at 8.30 p.m. at the SOLAS centre. And later, at 9.30 p.m., there will be a special 'Carry the Light' ceremony at the lighthouse.

It promises to be a very special day of heritage, community, storytelling and remembrance, honouring 160 years of maritime history on the Erris coast.
