Dillon welcomes west Mayo housing boost
Minister Alan Dillon TD has today welcomed the inclusion of a key Westport project under the Government’s €1 billion Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF), describing it as a major step forward in unlocking housing delivery in Mayo.
The project at Lodge Road / Monamore, with an indicative investment of approximately €1 million, will deliver essential infrastructure including road upgrades, footpaths, public lighting, and active travel measures.
It involves a 900‑metre road upgrade, new public lighting and SuDS drainage infrastructure.
The works are expected to directly enable the delivery of up to 200 new homes, with further potential across the wider area.
The HIIF is a flagship Government initiative aimed at removing infrastructure barriers that prevent housing from being built on zoned and serviced land.
Minister Alan Dillon TD said: “This is very welcome and significant news for Westport and for the wider Mayo region.
This investment goes to the heart of the housing challenge, unlocking land that is ready to go but has been held back by missing infrastructure.
‘At Lodge Road and Monamore, we have strong demand, committed interest from developers, and land with real potential.
What was missing was safe access and connectivity.
This funding now provides that certainty and clears the way for homes to be delivered.”
Minister Dillon also highlighted additional supporting investment that strengthens Westport’s capacity for new homes. Uisce Éireann is progressing upgrades to the town’s water treatment plant, while ESB Networks is investing in improvements to overhead lines and substations.
‘I want to acknowledge my colleague Councillor Peter Flynn for his determination in progressing this project, and Mayo County Council for bringing forward a strong and successful application.
This is exactly what this Government fund is designed to achieve removing barriers and delivering homes for families.
‘This strategic investment will provide the enabling infrastructure required to unlock key residential lands in Westport.
It is really important now for the Council to swiftly advance this project through planning and delivery stages as quickly as possible to support sustainable housing development and improved connectivity for the local community.”
Alan Dillon TD added: “This fund represents a major shift in how we approach housing delivery, while this is just the first call, and I would encourage other towns across Mayo to come forward with similar proposals.
There is a real opportunity here to unlock further housing and support the growth of our communities.”
