Mayo communities mourning the death of 'lovely lady' Gertie Lohan
The death of Gertie Lohan (née Curry), Rathbawn Road, Castlebar, and formerly of Cloonlee, Knock, has evoked an immense sense of loss and sorrow.
She died peacefully yesterday surrounded by her much loved family in the wonderful care of all the staff of the Carra Suite at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar.
A much-loved and popular personality, she served as an officer of the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee in Castlebar for many years.
Many fond tributes are being paid to her on social media.
One stated: "A true lady who will be sadly missed. Always great to be in the company of Gertie and at family occasions. She always put a smile on your face.
"Gertie was a wonderful person who left beautiful memories in our hearts."
Another said: "I knew Gertie through Impact/Forsa trade union. She was a lovely vibrant person."
A further tribute observed: "I worked in County Clinic in Castlebar with Gertie and she was such a lovely, kind and and warm caring lady. I remember her gorgeous smile and great sense of fun."
She is deeply regretted by her loving husband John and her family, Joan Carmody (Cappawhite, Co Tipperary), Paul (Ennis), James (Lucan, Co Dublin) and John (Castlebar), sisters Mary Jennings (Knock), Bridie Mc Loughlin (Claremorris) and Nell McNicholas (Kiltimagh), brothers Martin (Swinford) and Tom (Knock), her grandchildren Mikey, Aisling, Éabha, Ciara, Donncha, Naoise, Dáithí, Emelia, Kate and Henry, son-in-law Sean, daughters-in-law Jo, Emma and Arundhati, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours, former colleagues at the HSE and friends.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the Lohan and Curry families on their loss.
Gertie was predeceased by her parents Jim and Annie Curry and her brother James.
Remains will repose in Coady’s Funeral Home, Castlebar, on Sunday from 5:30 until 7 p.m.
Removal from her home on Monday morning at 10:30 to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, to arrive 11 a.m. for Requiem Mass at 11:30.
Interment takes place afterwards in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.
May her gentle soul rest in peace.
