Mayo winners of An Club Ceoil sticker competition revealed

To celebrate three years of the popular Trad session for young people ‘An Club Ceoil san Linenhall’, Music of Mayo and The Linenhall Arts Centre devised an art competition for young people to design their new club sticker.

The organisers were blown a way by the high number of entries and the high standard of the entries and would like to sincerely thank all who participated for their creativity.

“An Club Ceoil is a weekly meeting of young musicians who meet at the Linenhall to swap tunes, play music and use their Irish language.

The informal and social nature of the meet ups for under 18's has been key to the popularity of the sessions.

Therefore it was only fitting that young people were invited to create the new art work.

In fact, the judging panel included young artists from local secondary school.

Ensuring the young people were involved at every step in the decision process” says Deirdre Melvin, Arts Access Officer at the Linenhall.

Rose Muldowney (Castlebar) was awarded the top prize, while Aideen Ní Chionnaith (Westport), and Eithne Wright (Newport) received special merit awards.

The winners were announced at a prize giving edition of An Club Ceoil. All winners were presented with hampers full of art materials.

The competition winner Rose Muldowney received a bespoke framed presentation of her art work and her sticker design will be printed and shared with all young musicians who come to play music in the Linenhall, Castlebar.

Facilitated by traditional musician Emer Mayock in association with Music of Mayo the sessions encourage participation, learning of new tunes, playing old favourites and the use of the Irish language is strongly supported.

Since its inception in 2023 the session has become a much-loved addition to the cultural landscape.

The strong line up of visiting guest musicians such as: Diarmuid Swift, Alex Dunlop, Hannah Lyons, Laoise Kelly, Hannah and Molly Pittendrigh, Dave Munnelly, Fiachra and Tadhg Kilkenny Hopkins, Catherine Joyce and more is a testament to the joy that comes from playing music.

Emer Mayock shares “An Club Ceoil has gone from strength to strength this year.

We are incredibly proud of the young talented musicians who attend An Club Ceoil, whose enthusiasm for Mayo’s music and the Irish language has made this a wonder year.

We look forward to returning to the Linenhall in the autumn. Cas cúpla port, buail le cairde nua agus labhair Gaeilge linn!”
