'Play Your Part' call made by Mayo GAA to supporters
Mayo GAA is urging supporters to get behind Andy Moran's charges in their crucial All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Round 3 encounter with Meath.
It's last chance saloon for both teams as they bid to reach the All-Ireland quarterfinals and with home advantage tomorrow (Saturday, June 20), Mayo GAA want to see Green and Red supporters in their droves at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, Castlebar.
“Tomorrow evening is set to be a special one,” Mayo GAA posted on its social media channels. “We're delighted to welcome the Clew Bay Pipe Band to Hastings Insurance MacHale Park to entertain supporters. Make sure you get there early, bring the flags, bring the noise, and get behind the team.”
Gates open at 4.30 p.m., with the Clew Bay Pipe Band set to entertain the crowd from 5.15 p.m. The game throw-in time is 6.15 p.m.
Mayo ended up in Round 3 after losing their Round 2A encounter against Tyrone in Omagh last Sunday, while Meath kept their chances alive thanks to a Round 2B victory in Derry on Saturday evening.
The meeting tomorrow will be the first between the counties since 2019, when Mayo won by nine points in Croke Park.
However, Meath have had the upper hand in championship meetings, beating Mayo in 2009 in an All-Ireland quarterfinal (2-15 to 1-15) and famously in 1996 in an All-Ireland final replay (2-9 to 1-11) after a drawn first game (Meath 0-12, Mayo 1-9) in which the Royals staged a late comeback. Meath also triumphed in the 1988 All-Ireland semi-final, winning by 0-15 to 2-5.
The last competitive clash between the counties was in the 2021 Allianz League (Division 2), when Mayo won by eight points.
