Mayo PTAA tribute to the late Chris Barnicle

At the recent annual general meeting of the Castlebar Regional Council of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association held in the Community Centre, Belcarra, many tributes were paid to the late Chris Barnicle, Ballintubber.

Chris was a founder member of the regional council back in the early 1970s and over all the years done tremendous work in promoting the cause of temperance.

She was president of the regional council in 1998/99 when the Pioneer Association celebrated the centenary of its founding by Fr. James Cullen.

A very committed community worker, Chris Barnicle’s name was very much associated with the pioneers to which she dedicated so much of her time and energy over the years in organizing various competitions and Readoiri events for young and adult pioneers at local and regional level.

The enrolment of new members, especially at primary school level, gave her much joy.

When meetings took place in the Abbey and other venues in Ballintubber, she and members of the local centre gave a hearty cead mile failte to all.

Chris Barnicle was the recipient of many well-deserved awards in recognition of her dedication to the pioneer movement over all the years.

She will be remembered for her resilience and positive attitude but above all for her pleasant and gentle manner.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus reward her for her great work.

To Marie, Tony, Ger and all the Barnicle, Horan, Mulroy families and all Chris’s relations the Castlebar Regional Council PTAA. extends its deepest sympathy.
