Child pedestrian loses life in Mayo road traffic tragedy

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision involving a car and pedestrian in Mayo earlier today.

At approximately 11.20 a.m., gardaí and emergency services were alerted after a pedestrian was struck by a car on the N59 at Eskeragh, Crossmolina, near Ballina.

The pedestrian, a male child aged six, was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The body of the deceased has been conveyed to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital.

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

The local coroner has been notified.

The scene is preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local traffic diversions are in place.

The N59 has been closed at Esker between Crossmolina and Bellacorrick.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Road users and pedestrians with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area between 10.40 a.m. and 11.40 a.m. today are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
