Renovation of Mayo public house must be monitored by archaeologist
Mayo County Council has granted planning permission to Ger Whyte to renovate and extend existing public house, stores and smoking area at the Castle Inn premises at Castle Street, Castlebar, with revised front elevation, shopfront and layout at ground floor level.
The go-ahead has also been given to construct two two bedroom apartments at first floor level with amenity area and all ancillary site services the location.
The decision is subject to 10 planning conditions.
Because of the historical significance of Castle Street as one of the original streets of the county town, the developer is required to employ a suitably qualified archaeologist to monitor under licence all ground disturbance including all service trenches and connections to stormwater and public sewers.
Should archaeological/historical material be uncovered during the course of the monitoring, the archaeologist will have work on the site stopped, pending a decision as to how best to deal with the discoveries.
The premises has been closed for an extended period and will reopen following the completion of works.
