Mayo arts centre offers arts, adventure and advocacy this July

The Linenhall's summer programme continues throughout July, offering a vibrant mix of summer camps, community engagement events, visual arts and creative activities for a range of diverse audiences.

The ‘STEAM Summer Camp’ with facilitator Hassan Dabbagh takes place from July 7 to 9.

Combining science, technology, engineering, arts and maths, the camp encourages participants aged 8-16 years to explore creativity through hands-on learning, experimentation and problem-solving activities.

Creativity and imagination come to the fore from July 14 to 16 with a ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ themed Summer Camp led by visual artist and gamer Wayne O'Connor.

Participants aged 10-17 years will explore storytelling, character creation, world-building and visual art inspired by the popular fantasy role-playing game.

Animation takes centre stage from July 20 to 24 with the ‘Summer Animation Camp’ for kids and teens.

Young participants will have the opportunity to develop animation skills, explore digital creativity and bring their own ideas to life through a range of engaging, hands-on activities.

The Linenhall's commitment to inclusion and community engagement continues with the ‘Trans Self-Advocacy Skills Lab’ on Saturday, July 4.

This practical workshop provides participants with tools and strategies to build confidence, develop self-advocacy skills and navigate everyday situations in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Also on July 4, audiences are invited to an Artists Talk marking the conclusion of the exhibition ‘Two Singers, One Song.’

The event offers a final opportunity to hear exhibiting artists Sheila Vollmer and Jackie Askew discuss their creative practice, influences and the ideas behind their collaborative exhibition.

As noted by Cherry Smyth in her accompanying exhibition essay: ‘While Sheila Vollmer takes industrial materials made for strength and function and repurposes them in ways that undermine their usefulness, Jackie Askew smashes the flatness of the traditional 2D painterly surface to reveal the 3D elements behind and within it.

Both thematically and methodologically, the two artists, as the title of the show suggests, align more than at first meets the eye.

Both defy the traditional limits of materiality.’
