Mayo family raising funds for neurological illness in memory of Gerry Biggins
A Mayo family is raising funds for the Dublin Neurological Institute and the Mater Hospital in a memory of a wonderful husband and father.
To mark one year since the passing of Gerry Biggins, Carnacon, Claremorris, his family and friends are taking part in the Tochar Pádraig Walk from Ballintubber Abbey to Croagh Patrick on Saturday July 18.
Gerry battled a neurological illness for 23 years yet never received a definitive cause or diagnosis.
The illness progressed quickly, taking away Gerry’s ability to speak, all forms of communication, all of his motor functions and independence and left him needing full-time care which was provided by his wife Una .
Gerry had multiple stays in different hospitals through these years but in particular several weeks in the Mater Hospital Dublin, where he received outstanding care and support from Prof. Tim Lynch and his team.
More research is needed into neurological conditions like Gerry’s.
No one should have to battle an unknown condition.
In Ireland the waiting time to see a neurologist can be up to 36 months, this is the time that no many people don’t have.
Ireland also ranks among the lowest countries in Europe for neurology staffing relative to its population.
Funding is needed to help support both staff and patients. All funds raised here will directly go to these great causes.
The family stated: "We hope you can help us by donating whatever you can, it would be greatly appreciated. All donations are processed securely.
"We would love if anyone would like to join us on the day of the walk, please text or WhatsApp us on (085) 2853078 or (087) 2955029."
