New Northern Ireland police ombudsman appointed

A new police ombudsman of Northern Ireland has been appointed by the first and deputy first ministers.

Jacqui Durkin, who has served as the Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice in Northern Ireland, will take up her new role on Friday.

The position has been unfilled since Marie Anderson resigned in December 2025.

The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland independently investigates complaints and incidents involving the conduct of the police.

Northern Ireland's Justice Minister Naomi Long welcomed Durkin’s appointment, thanking her for the “leadership and expertise” she showed as Chief Inspector.

“Jacqui brings a wealth of experience to the role of Police Ombudsman and I wish her every success during her tenure,” she said.

She added: “The Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice in Northern Ireland plays a crucial role in fostering improvements throughout the justice sector.

“The inspection programme overseen by the Chief Inspector enables us to develop a more effective and efficient criminal justice system for the people of Northern Ireland and Jacqui will bring a track record of leadership and achievement to her new role.”
