Mayo county town grieves the passing of a great community man
The death of Jack Loftus, Marian Row, Castlebar, has evoked a tremendous sense of loss in the county town.
He died peacefully earlier today in the loving care of the staff of St. John’s Ward, Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar, and Abbey Breaffy Nursing Home.
A founder member of Castlebar Credit Union, now First Choice Credit Union, Jack gave outstanding service to the community over many years.
An accomplished photographer, he was associated with many local organisations, including the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
A former member of the staff of Castlebar Urban Council, he was widely known throughout the town for his good nature, generosity and love of his native town.
Jack, who grew up in St. Patrick's Avenue, worked in Western Hats, Newport Road, for many years and had a keen interest in gardening and local history.
Many warm tributes are being paid to him on social media.
One stated: "He was a great character and loved to spend time walking along Lough Lannagh capturing photographs of everyone he knew as they passed by."
"A wonderful character, full of fun and a great photographer," another said.
"A man who made an immense contribution to supporting community life in Castlebar over many years. Always a pleasure to meet him," a further tribute stated.
Former local councillor Kevin Guthrie said: "Jack was a big part of life in Castlebar all his life and he will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of his company."
He is survived by his wife Maisie, sons John (Castlebar), David (Westport) and Paul (Manulla), daughters-in-law Elaine and Linda, grandchildren Jack, Nathan, Molly, Faolán and Réalta, brother Harry, sisters Mary and Ann, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours, former colleagues and many friends, to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
Jack was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Rita.
Jack will repose in Coady’s Funeral Home, Castlebar, tomorrow (Tuesday) from 5 p.m. with removal at 7 p.m. to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.
Requiem Mass takes on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. followed by burial afterwards in the Old Cemetery, Castlebar.
