Westport United underage teams to raise funds for Cancer Fund for Children

A new community fundraising initiative will see every goal scored by Westport United's under-10 to under-19 boys' and girls' teams over the next ten weeks help raise funds for The Daisy Voyage’s fundraising journey for The Cancer Fund for Children and the new Daisy Lodge in Cong.

The initiative, Goals for Daisy, has been made possible thanks to the generosity of Westport natives Liam and Aneta Walsh and family, who have pledged to donate €5 for every goal scored, up to a total of €7,500, during the Mayo Schoolboys and Girls league season.

The fundraiser has been launched in partnership with Westport United FC and The Daisy Voyage. This campaign follows Tom Bourke and Bryan Hyland as they prepare to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic in the World's Toughest Row this December to raise vital funds that will contribute to the opening and operation of the new therapeutic short break centre for children with a cancer diagnosis and their families, due to open in early 2027.

Speaking about the initiative, Richard Grady, Chairman of Westport United said:

"We are absolutely delighted to be able to support Tom and Bryan through Goals for Daisy and to be associated with The Daisy Voyage. Hopefully we'll see plenty of goals and excitement across our boys' and girls' games over the summer. We'd also like to say a special thank you to Liam and Aneta Walsh and family for their incredible generosity and continued support of our community."

Tom Bourke said the fundraiser perfectly captures what The Daisy Voyage is all about: "From the very beginning, this journey has been about community. To see local young players helping raise money every time they score a goal is something really special. We're incredibly grateful to Liam, Aneta and family for their generosity, and to everyone at Westport United for getting behind the idea."

Bryan Hyland added: "Every goal scored over the next ten weeks will help families across Ireland who need Cancer Fund for Children and getting the doors open to The Daisy Lodge in Cong. It's a brilliant way to bring sport and community together for a cause that means so much to us, and we can't wait to follow the goal tally over the summer."

The Daisy Voyage will see Tom Bourke and Bryan Hyland row from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean, covering more than 3,000 miles over approximately 60 days at sea in one of the world's toughest endurance events.

Weekly goal updates will be shared throughout the campaign as Westport United's young footballers help drive the fundraising effort forward.
