Mayo artist Luke Davis unveils landmark exhibition
MORE than 70 new paintings and sculptures by Castlebar artist Luke Davis were unveiled to a packed audience at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Thursday evening, as his second major solo exhibition, Grá & Buíochas (Love & Gratitude), officially opened.
Guests were welcomed by Fiona Neary, head of operations at the Linenhall Arts Centre, who praised both the quality and scale of the exhibition.
She noted that very few contemporary artists today could fill the Linenhall's exhibition spaces with more than 70 new works, describing the exhibition as a remarkable achievement and a fitting celebration of one of Mayo's most distinctive artistic voices.
The exhibition was officially opened by writer and photographer Adrian Taheny, who also launched Luke's first major exhibition, The Way I See It, in 2022.
In his address, Adrian reflected on Luke's continuing artistic journey, describing him as an artist whose work is driven not by the desire to reproduce what he sees, but to express what he feels.
"Each piece begins with a blank canvas and no predetermined destination," he said. "Through meditation, intuition and trust, the work slowly reveals itself until, in Luke's own words, 'the form is completed'."
He told those attending that the exhibition represented a significant evolution in Luke's work over the past three years and confirmed Luke as 'an artist continuing to evolve, deepen and refine his own distinctive visual language'.
Particular attention was drawn to Luke's striking sculptural trees, inspired by the windswept landscapes of Ireland's western seaboard. Fashioned from timber shaped by decades of Atlantic winds and mounted on stones gathered from that same rugged coastline, the sculptures quickly became one of the talking points of the evening.
Describing the collection, Adrian said the sculptures 'speak of endurance, belonging and the quiet dialogue between nature and place', adding that they remind us that 'true strength is found not in resisting life's forces, but in allowing ourselves to be shaped by them with grace'.
The exhibition's title, Grá & Buíochas (Love & Gratitude), perfectly captures the spirit of the collection. Luke's paintings and sculptures radiate both qualities, celebrating beauty, connection, nature, spirit and the extraordinary energy that surrounds us every day, inviting visitors to pause, reflect and experience the world through a different lens.
The opening attracted a large attendance of family, friends, art lovers and supporters from across Mayo and beyond. Among those welcomed were Luke's daughters, Zoe, who lives locally, and Stacey, who travelled home from New Zealand for the occasion. Family friends Bradley and Chloe Thomas also travelled from the United Kingdom to represent their parents, Cliff and Sheila Thomas, lifelong friends of Luke.
The evening concluded with a warm round of applause for Luke, whose emotional response reflected both his gratitude and the significance of exhibiting once again in his hometown.
Grá & Buíochas runs at the Linenhall Arts Centre until August 12. Visitors can expect an uplifting and deeply personal collection of more than 70 paintings and sculptures that continues Luke Davis's remarkable artistic journey and offers a unique opportunity to experience the work of one of Mayo's most distinctive contemporary artists.
