Busy weekend on Croagh Patrick for Mayo Mountain Rescue

MAYO Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) had a busy weekend on Croagh Patrick, with two call-outs to help people who suffered falls.

On Saturday, the team were tasked shortly before 4 p.m. by An Garda Síochána to assist a walker who fell while descending the mountain. A stretcher party was deployed from Murrisk and met the casualty, who was being cared for by her walking companions. She was safely stretchered from the mountain.

At 9 a.m. on Sunday the team were again tasked by An Garda Síochána to help another walker who suffered a fall. The alarm was raised by a passerby who stayed with the casualty until the mountain rescue team arrived and stretchered her back to the base of the mountain.

Noting the help given by a volunteer with the Croagh Patrick Ambassadors and also the member of the public who helped the second casualty, a MMRT spokesperson said: “Acts like these are a reminder of the incredible community spirit we so often witness on the mountain.”

Also over the weekend, the team assisted with an incident on Jamsie's Loop in Wild Nephin National Park on Friday.

The call-out was a multi-agency response involving the gardaí, HSE National Ambulance Service, Defence Forces, Wild Nephin National Park staff and MMRT.

A female hiker sustained a lower leg injury after slipping in very wet underfoot conditions while walking Jamsie's Loop.

She was assessed and treated at the scene by National Park staff and members of the Irish Defence Forces before the mountain rescue team arrived and transferred her by stretcher approximately one kilometre to a waiting ambulance.

On their social media, MMRT thanked all agencies involved for the excellent teamwork and cooperation, ensuring the casualty received prompt and effective care.
