Clothes bank removed from Mayo site as dumping escalates
A CLOTHES bank in Ballyhaunis has been removed, with escalating dumping taking place at the location.
A new site, with CCTV cameras, is under discussion.
Local Councillor Alma Gallagher said the photograph above was taken on Monday morning of last week and shows the condition of the clothing banks.
Individuals had been removing clothing from the banks, creating an eyesore and encouraging further illegal dumping, she explained.
Said Councillor Gallagher: “This behaviour cannot and will not be tolerated.
“Following ongoing concerns regarding the ownership, licensing and management of the clothing banks, the difficult decision has been taken to remove the banks from the site.
“I appreciate that this will inconvenience many people who used them responsibly, but unfortunately there was no viable alternative given the circumstances.
“The site is being closely monitored, and discussions are ongoing with Mayo County Council regarding the replacement of the clothing banks and the most appropriate location for any future facility.
“CCTV cameras will be installed at the site, making this the first location in County Mayo to benefit from the newly established Mayo County Council oversight committee's initiative to tackle illegal dumping and environmental crime. However due to the escalating dumping we could no longer wait for these procedures to be delivered.
“Ballyhaunis deserves better than this. Illegal dumping is unfair on local residents, costs taxpayers money to clean up, and damages the appearance of our town.”
