Positive update on extension for south Mayo burial grounds

MAYO County Council's environment section is in discussions with an adjoining landowner about the acquisition of additional lands for Kilmaine Cemetery.

The council has also confirmed that there are a sufficient number of spaces remaining in the existing cemetery to cater for expected demand over the next few years.

The update at the monthly municipal district meeting was welcomed by Councillor Patsy O'Brien who thanked the landowners and caretakers and people who look after the graveyard.

There are spaces there, he commented, but there is no guarantee that there aren't people already buried in them previously, he told the meeting.

A number of people have brought the matter to his attention, concerned about future burials, he added.
