Council asked to install water tap in south Mayo cemetery

RESIDENTS in Tourmakeady have asked for a water supply to be brought to within the grounds of Churchfield Graveyard.

There is a tap across the road from the cemetery, but it's on a busy and dangerous road and presents a hazard.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne is supporting the residents and he will be bringing the request to Mayo County Council by tabling a notice of motion on the matter for the next Castlebar Municipal District meeting.

In correspondence to elected representatives, two local residents explained: “Churchfield Graveyard is a place of great importance to our community. It is maintained to a very high standard, thanks to the dedication and hard work of those responsible for its upkeep. Families greatly appreciate the care that is taken to ensure the graveyard remains a peaceful and respectful place to visit.

“However, one essential facility is missing - a water supply within the graveyard itself.

“At present, the nearest water tap is located across the road from the graveyard. Visitors wishing to water flowers or clean headstones must cross the road carrying watering cans or containers before returning the same way. This presents an unnecessary safety risk, particularly for older people, people with disabilities, those with reduced mobility, and anyone visiting with young children. This is a very busy and dangerous road.

“In addition, the location of the tap on the lake side is an area that is overgrown, steep, with an uneven surface. For many members of our community, accessing the existing tap is simply not practical.”

They added: “A water tap within the graveyard would allow families to care for the graves of their loved ones safely and with dignity, without the need to cross a busy road carrying heavy containers.

“It is a relatively small improvement that would make a significant difference to many people in our community.”
