End of an era signalled for licenced trade in Mayo county town
The former Bucko's Pub, Linenhall Street, Castlebar, which more recently trading as Sully's Bar, is under new ownership.
Auctioneer Cyril Burke has confirmed that a Dublin-based development company has acquired the property.
It has also been learned that it is unlikely to reopen as a licenced premises, marking the end of an era for the trade in the town.
The original owner of the public house was Bucko Sheridan, a name fondly remembered in the county town.
The Sheridan family kept a cow at the rear of the premises which was marched through the bar every evening to a stable.
In more recent times Bucko's Bar traded under the names of The Yew Tree and Sam Adam’s before having its original name restored in September 2020 when local man Pat Moran took over the running of it in the aftermath of Covid.
It subsequently closed in March 2024 before Martin O’Sullivan has been granted a licence to operate the premises as Sully’s Bar and Bistro in May 2025 and it closed for business earlier this year.
The premises was redeveloped to an exceptionally high standard in the early 2000s and spans approximately 3,000 square feet across three floors.
Now speculation is rife the property will be converted into offices and/or residential space.
