Mayo native features in new documentary premiering at Galway Film Fleadh
'The SU' documentary will have its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh this Sunday, July 12, at 3 p.m. in the Town Hall Theatre. Directed and produced by Gerard Conway, Mark Byrne and Rob Dennis, the film offers unprecedented access to the lives of Students’ Union officers as they organise protests, campaign for change, support their fellow students and grow into their roles as leaders.
Filmed over two years (2023 - 2025), the documentary captures not only the challenges faced by student representatives, but also the friendships, humour and energy that define student life in Galway.
At the centre of the film is Belcarra native Dean Kenny, who served as president of the University of Galway Students’ Union in 2023/24. The documentary follows Dean and his executive team as they deliver a series of significant reforms: securing a €100 cut to repeat exam fees, blocking a proposed rent increase, strengthening student representation across university governance, and raising a record €53,000 for charity. He also oversaw the return of official RAG Week after 12 years, with a full programme of charity events culminating in 'SOS' - the largest student social event ever held in Galway City.
Dean’s tenure reflects a long tradition of Mayo figures shaping student activism in Galway. The University of Galway Students’ Union has produced some of Ireland’s most influential public voices - including former President Michael D. Higgins - and has been central to national debates on issues from contraception and abortion to the Troubles and international conflicts.
The documentary highlights how today’s student leaders continue that legacy: advocating for fairness, challenging policy decisions, and ensuring students’ voices are heard at every level.
The world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh marks a significant moment not only for the filmmakers, but also for Mayo’s strong tradition of civic leadership and youth activism right across the country.
